A scientist’s case for the afterlife…
Thousands of people have had near-death experiences, but scientists have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those scientists. A highly trained neurosurgeon, Alexander knew that NDEs feel real, but are simply fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress.
Then, Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by a rare illness. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion—and in essence makes us human—shut down completely. For seven days he lay in a coma. Then, as his doctors considered stopping treatment, Alexander’s eyes popped open. He had come back.
Alexander’s recovery is a medical miracle. But the real miracle of his story lies elsewhere. While his body lay in coma, Alexander journeyed beyond this world and encountered an angelic being who guided him into the deepest realms of super-physical existence. There he met, and spoke with, the Divine source of the universe itself.
Alexander’s story is not a fantasy. Before he underwent his journey, he could not reconcile his knowledge of neuroscience with any belief in heaven, God, or the soul. Today Alexander is a doctor who believes that true health can be achieved only when we realize that God and the soul are real and that death is not the end of personal existence but only a transition.
This story would be remarkable no matter who it happened to. That it happened to Dr. Alexander makes it revolutionary. No scientist or person of faith will be able to ignore it. Reading it will change your life.

Dr. Alexander, 58, was so changed by the experience that he felt compelled to write a book, “Proof of Heaven,” that recounts his experience.
“This book covers topics that are of interest to a lot of people: consciousness, near death, and heaven,” said Priscilla Painton, the executive editor at Simon & Schuster, who acquired the book.

As far as Near Death Experience (NDE) is concerned this book is ‘must read’. I found it very readable. I have found many experiences being quoted in Mahikari literature. But this one gives a more ‘scientific’ description. We will have to agree with Frijof Kapra (The Tao of Physics)and Amuray de Reincor (The Eye of Shiva) (The spelling of the names of authors may not be correct) that ‘Science’ is not final, it is evolving and one will have to search for the final answers always. This book also points towards that.We would be happy to learn or relearn from Dr.Eben that God is unfathomable LOVE. Naturally the meaninglessness of all the fighting going on in the world in the name of God, or in the name of different Gods dawns on the reader. Dr.Eben agrees with almost all the mystics like Ekhart, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Sri Auraobindo, Arthur Koestler, etc, that certain experiences cannot be explained using our language. This book makes us Hopeful.

It is an interesting book. Those who expected a detailed account of the other world may be disappointed. But the author has succeeded in his mission to convey that there is a very real world beyond this earth life, and we are closely interconnected by a loving God who takes care of us irrespective of who we are, with unconditional love. Further, “whatever our struggles and sufferings in the present world are, they can’t truly touch the larger, eternal beings we, in truth, are”.
The book endorses all I have read earlier on near-death experiences and connected topics. It is one of the best books on the subject. I recommend this book to those who are already in ‘the road less travelled’ or who are curious about the world beyond.

I had heard about many stories of people coming back after having ‘died’. There are so many unexplained ‘facts’. But found it very difficult to convince the logical part of my mind. At best these were the ‘gray’ cases.
So when someone ( a spiritual leader) recommended this book, it was with a bit of skepticism that I started reading it. But soon I found it so gripping that I had to read it fully – cover to cover.
Book talks about the ‘experience’ of a neurosurgeon – by his own account – a case that is unique in more than one ways especially it involves a case that has lot of scientific evidence.
If you have also wondered about veracity of the claims of Near Death Experiences (NDE), this is the book for you. Very gripping and scientific.

A truly wonderful book. A neurosurgeon, Eben Alexander, knew from years of work on thousands of brains that if the neocortex is shut down, there is no possibility of creating ideas or recalling memories or any other way of producing experience. Then he suffered bacterial meningitis and lost all neocortical function for seven days. That he survived at all is miraculous. He recovered all of his memories and expertise, except for one thing, his “scientific” disbelief in the spiritual or any kind of afterlife. He had experienced heaven. In clear, non-technical terms he explains exactly what happened and what he discovered, that instead of the brain being the source of the spiritual, it is the other way around.

A fascinating addition to the Near Death Experience stories. A previously very skeptical brain surgeon had a powerful NDE and clearly receives the message that a loving power forms the universe. The three main messages he received were 1) You are loved and cherished 2) You have nothing to fear and 3) There is nothing you can do wrong. These echoed thoughts I found in Anita Moorjani’s book about her NDE titled Dying to be Me: “I no longer feared death, cancer, accidents or any of the myriad things that used to concern me…I know that I – along with everyone else – am a powerful, magnificent, unconditionally loved, and loving force.” And “…I wasn’t judged for anything during my NDE. There was only compassion, and the love was unconditional.”
I liked Dr. Alexander’s book and thought he had a very clear way of explaining the incredibleness of his experience as well as the reasons he had been skeptical and the reason he changed his mind.

Just started listening to the audio version of this book and am enjoying it so far. As a devout Christian, all I need do is attach the familiar religious labels I know to the author’s experiences and it all fits together. I love his scientific view and in-depth discussion of the brain. I studied neurology for a semester and found it be to very interesting as well as extremely difficult “matter”.
